The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) announced a 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Hawaii on Sunday. Strong shaking was reportedly felt throughout the Hawaiian islands though damage has been slight. A 4.3 magnitude aftershock was felt five minutes later.
Hawaiian Volcano Observatory officials stated, “A magnitude-4.3 aftershock occurred at 11:53 a.m., about 5 km (3 miles) north of the magnitude-6.2 earthquake at a depth of 36 km (22 miles). Two smaller aftershocks followed these quakes and other aftershocks are possible and could be felt.”
They also reported that the Mauna Loa and Kīlauea volcanoes do not appear to have been impacted by the quake or its aftershocks.
